My Father Fred Singer, passed away, October 25th 2009. My Father was 76 years old. As he liked to say, “I had  75 incredible years!”, he had just celebrated 50 years with my Mother Betsy, 3 daughters, Deborah, Marci and Lisa "Freddy's Girls" and 7 grandchildren, Michael, Rachel, Alex, Lindsey, Miles, Harris and Adam, who loved him as Pop.

Although each of us will die one day, what my Father had to endure just for a diagnosis for the insurance companies is painful to have to recall. Pancreatic cancer is extremely difficult to diagnosis and that may be why the cancer is often too far along before it is finally diagnosed.

What I will never forget was prior to the diagnosis we had seen three surgeons as a proactive approach to the possibly that my Dad may be a candidate for the Whipple Procedure. My Father had to ask the last surgeon, “how long ago was the Whipple procedure developed?” The answer, the 1940’s. My Father replied almost as a joke, “so tell me what newer options I have?” The answer, this is the only procedure. My Father remarked “with all the technology available you are offering me a procedure that has not changed in over 50 years!”

By the time he was finally diagnosis it was stage 4. The Whipple was not an option. He survived 6 very difficult months surrounded by so many people who my Father had touched throughout his life. He was a pioneer in the film industry in Florida and had a very colorful life and wanted the end to be filled with much love, hugs and smiles. My Father was also an advocate for others from every walk of life and I know how important your support would be to him and all the families this Cancer touches. I do worry that this form of cancer will reappear one day in my family and with your support we can make a larger commitment to detecting and treating this terrible disease.

We're just beginning to gear up for The 7th Annual Online Auction for Diabetes Research, which will open on May 1st and run through May 31st.

GREAT NEWS! Last year, we broke the $1 million mark (as a cumulative total) and set a new annual record by raising $303,000!! I hope that our seventh year will be another new record for us. Please join with me in fighting to make a difference.

I run this fundraiser in honor of my youngest son, who was diagnosed with Type 1 at five years old (he's now 14), and the millions of others who suffer from diabetes. The proceeds have one purpose—to help find a cure—and will go to the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami. Brenda Novak’s Online Auction for Diabetes Research is a registered 501(c)3, so any cash donation is tax deductible.

Thank you to all who have participated in my previous auctions. I hope you'll come back and bring your friends.
